University of Edinburgh - ARCHER Supercomputer
Callidus Design was appointed to conduct a peer review of the mechanical and electrical design carried out by Crown House Technologies for the new Super Computer Suite at The Easter Bush Campus, The University of Edinburgh.
A new computer suite was constructed for the £43 million ARCHER (Academic Research Computing High End Resource) system which will provide high performance computing support for research and industrial projects in the UK. The massively Parallel Processor uses Cray’s XC30 hardware.
The new building housing the ARCHER system is amongst the greenest computer centres in the world, with cooling costs of only eight pence for every pound spent on power.
Crown House Technologies carried out the mechanical and electrical design for the services and Callidus Design was subsequently appointed to review and check all calculations, schematics and installation proposals in order to meet their internal quality control procedures.
The mechanical systems checked included:
- Chilled Water System
- Condenser Water System
- Cooling Towers
- Controls System
The electrical systems checked included:
- High Voltage switchgear selection
- Transformer selection
- Standby Generator selection
- Low Voltage Switchboard selection, sizing and capacities
- Sub mains cabling selection, sizing and installation methods
